Thiruvananthapuram, 02 August (H.S.) :The intensity of rainfall across Kerala is expected to gradually decrease in the coming days, though several parts of the State are likely to continue receiving heavy rain on Monday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday.
According to the latest weather forecast, heavy rainfall is expected to persist for another day before weakening considerably thereafter. In view of the prevailing conditions, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for 10 districts on Monday, warning of isolated heavy rainfall.
For Sunday, yellow alerts have been issued for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts.
Thunderstorms accompanied by rain are also likely at isolated places. The weather department has cautioned residents, particularly those in vulnerable and low-lying areas, to remain alert as saturated soil and swollen water bodies could increase the risk of localised flooding and other rain-related incidents.
The IMD defines very heavy rainfall as precipitation ranging between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm within a 24-hour period.
On Monday, yellow alerts will remain in force in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts. Isolated heavy rainfall is forecast in these districts.
Heavy rainfall, according to the IMD classification, refers to precipitation ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within 24 hours.
While Monday could see another spell of significant rainfall in parts of the State, weather conditions are expected to improve subsequently as the intensity of the rain gradually weakens.
Authorities have urged people to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid unnecessary travel through areas vulnerable to flooding and landslides. Residents have also been advised to closely follow official weather alerts and instructions issued by district administrations until conditions improve.
