Idukki, 02 August (H.S.): The intensity of rain has eased in Idukki district, with showers now occurring intermittently, but authorities continue to remain on alert as strong inflows have pushed up water levels in major reservoirs and increased the risk of landslides in the high ranges.

Four dams — Kallarkutty, Kallar, Pambla and Malankara — have been opened to release excess water following increased inflows. Officials are closely monitoring reservoir levels as water continues to flow into the dams from their catchment areas.

The water level in the Idukki reservoir recorded a significant rise, increasing by around nine feet in a single day on Saturday. The level has crossed 2,339.62 feet. However, it remains considerably below the level recorded during the corresponding period last year, when the reservoir stood at 2,376.20 feet.

Meanwhile, the water level in the Mullaperiyar dam remains relatively low at 116.7 feet, providing some relief amid concerns over continuing rainfall in the catchment areas.

Restrictions imposed as a precautionary measure remain in force across the district. Entry to tourism destinations continues to be prohibited, while the ban on night travel through vulnerable high-range areas has also been extended. Authorities have urged residents and travellers to exercise caution as the threat of landslides persists in several mountainous areas.

On the Kumily-Pooppara State Highway, work to remove a tree that fell near Puliyanmala is in its final stages. Strong winds were also reported from several parts of the district, adding to the damage caused by the rain.

At least 14 houses were damaged across Idukki on Saturday due to rain and strong winds. Relief operations are continuing in affected areas, with 101 people currently accommodated in seven relief camps.

District authorities are maintaining heightened surveillance in landslide-prone areas and near rivers and reservoirs, even as rainfall shows signs of weakening.
