Guwahati, 02 Aug (HS): Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a series of major relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction measures for people affected by the recent floods, reaffirming that the state government stands firmly with every affected family. The announcements were highlighted in a press statement issued by BJP Assam spokesperson Brajen Mahanta.
According to the statement, the previously announced one-time financial assistance of ₹15,000 will be directly credited to the bank accounts of flood-affected families between August 3 and 5. Around 85,000 families across Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat districts are expected to benefit. Families still unable to return home will receive an additional ₹10,000 on August 10.
To ensure that students' education is not disrupted, the government has released nearly ₹8 crore from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund to provide two sets of school uniforms to students from Classes I to VIII. Domestic electricity consumers in Sivasagar and Charaideo using up to 300 units per month will be exempted from paying their July power bills, while flood-affected residents of the two districts will also receive a complete waiver of land revenue for the current financial year.
The government has further announced financial assistance of ₹2 lakh each for damaged schools, ₹1.5 lakh for Namghars, and ₹2 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh for Anganwadi centres to support restoration and reconstruction.
The Chief Minister also said that insurance claims of flood victims will be processed on priority following a meeting with representatives of 46 insurance companies. Special helplines, district-level nodal officers, interim relief, and simplified documentation procedures will be introduced to ensure speedy settlement of claims.
Permanent damage assessment will begin from August 7 after survey teams are trained by district administrations. The Assam Public Service Commission has also postponed the Assistant Engineer examination of the Public Health Engineering Department scheduled for August 9 due to the flood situation in Sivasagar and Charaideo.
The BJP welcomed the Chief Minister's decisions, stating that the government's comprehensive approach covering relief, rehabilitation, education, power, revenue and insurance reflects its commitment to public welfare. The statement also noted that women beneficiaries under the Orunodoi scheme in the three flood-affected districts have received enhanced financial assistance of ₹2,500 instead of ₹1,250. It added that, under the direction of Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia, thousands of party workers are actively engaged in relief and assistance work in the flood-hit areas.----------
