Howrah, 19 August (H.S.): A constable posted at the Nazirganj Police Outpost under Sankrail Police Station in Howrah Police Commissionerate was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) while allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹1 lakh.
The arrested constable has been identified as Shubhamay Mondal. According to an ACB statement issued on Wednesday, the accused allegedly tried to dispose of the bribe money during the operation by throwing bundles outside. However, ACB officials followed him and recovered the entire amount.
During the initial search, the ACB team recovered ₹50,000 from Mondal. The officials subsequently searched the area where he had allegedly thrown the remaining cash and recovered another ₹50,000. The entire alleged bribe amount of ₹1 lakh was thus recovered.
Mondal reportedly resisted the arrest and created a commotion during the operation. Despite his opposition, ACB officials took him into custody and formally arrested him. Further investigation into the case is underway.
The arrest comes a day after the ACB arrested Sub-Inspector Subrata Sarkar, posted at Bantra Police Station in Howrah. Sarkar was accused of allegedly accepting a bribe from a person involved in a case concerning the alleged harassment of a woman.
The ACB’s action against two Howrah police personnel in successive days has caused concern within the police department.
