New Delhi, 19 August (H.S.): India and Pakistan will renew their much-anticipated rivalry in the Hockey World Cup 2026 on Wednesday evening, with the high-voltage Pool D encounter set to take place at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands. The match has drawn the attention of hockey fans worldwide, with India aiming to secure a place in the semi-finals with a victory, while Pakistan face a virtual do-or-die situation.
The encounter is crucial for both teams. The top two sides from Pool D will remain in contention for the next stage, while teams finishing third and fourth will have to play classification matches.
India have played two matches in the tournament so far. They began their campaign with a 3-1 victory over Wales but suffered a 2-4 defeat against England in their second game. The match against Pakistan is India's third and final Pool D fixture. Pakistan, meanwhile, have collected just one point from two matches after recording one draw and one defeat and currently sit fourth in Pool D.
India Can Advance With a Draw
England have already secured a place among the top two after winning both their matches in Pool D. The battle for the second qualifying spot is now between India, Pakistan and Wales. India need at least a draw against Pakistan, while Pakistan and Wales must win their respective matches to keep their hopes alive.
India's Dominance Over Pakistan
India have enjoyed a remarkable record against Pakistan in recent years. Since the final of the 2016 South Asian Games, the two sides have met 19 times, with India winning 17 encounters and the remaining two ending in draws. Pakistan, therefore, have not defeated India in the past decade.
Ahead of Wednesday's clash, Hockey India highlighted the Indian senior men's team's dominance over Pakistan in a post on social media platform X, noting that the decade-long superiority would once again be tested on the World Cup stage. Captain Harmanpreet Singh and his teammates are now preparing for another chapter in one of international hockey's most celebrated rivalries.
The biggest challenge for India will be to maintain composure and discipline amid the intense emotions surrounding the contest. Given the long-standing rivalry between the two nations, the match is expected to be fiercely contested, with pressure and excitement reaching their peak.
The team that makes better use of its opportunities and maintains its composure under pressure is likely to have the edge in this high-stakes encounter.
