Kolkata, 19 August (H.S.): A court in Krishnanagar on Wednesday issued an arrest warrant against Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra in connection with alleged controversial remarks against the Indian Army.

The order was issued by Judicial Magistrate Third Court Judge Dibyendu Das after Moitra allegedly failed to appear before the court despite being summoned several times.

The case was filed by Chayan Nandi, a resident of Nazirpara in Krishnanagar. Advocate Shirshendu Das, appearing for the complainant, said the court had repeatedly issued summons directing the MP to appear personally. However, she allegedly remained absent on each of the scheduled dates.

According to the complainant's lawyer, the arrest warrant was issued on the final date fixed for Moitra's personal appearance before the court.

The complaint is not limited to the alleged remarks against the Army. It also accuses Moitra of making allegedly controversial and derogatory statements against Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The complaint further refers to alleged remarks concerning women being made to wear tulsi malas, burqas and hijabs.

The complainant's lawyer said several allegations had been made against Moitra, including allegedly hurting the dignity of women and making objectionable remarks against the Union Home Minister, the Army and its personnel. He said the repeated failure to appear before the court led to the issuance of the arrest warrant.

The case has been registered under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The complaint includes provisions relating to allegedly outraging the dignity of women, promoting enmity between different communities, hurting religious sentiments, criminal intimidation and alleged hate speech.

The court's order could increase the legal difficulties for the Krishnanagar MP. Further proceedings in the case are underway.
