Kolkata, 19 August (H.S.) : Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy has written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, alleging that he was harassed and heckled outside Kolkata airport on Tuesday. In his letter, the veteran MP named two BJP MLAs, Arijit Bakshi and Sourav Shikdar, and alleged that they were involved in the incident.
Roy had gone to the office of the Kolkata airport director on Tuesday to attend a meeting of the airport’s advisory board. Trouble reportedly began after the meeting when he got into his car. A group of protesters allegedly surrounded his vehicle, raised slogans of “chor chor” and waved black flags. Some protesters were also seen allegedly striking the bonnet of his car with their shoes.
The MP said he has provided the Lok Sabha Speaker with details of the incident. Speaking over the phone, Roy said he had informed the Speaker about everything that happened and stressed that he was an elected representative. He also alleged that two elected BJP representatives were involved in the incident.
Roy said he had specifically mentioned the names of BJP MLAs Arijit Bakshi and Sourav Shikdar in his letter to the Speaker.
Police personnel and security guards eventually managed to escort Roy’s vehicle out of the area amid the protest.
The incident is not the first time Roy has faced such protests since the results of the West Bengal Assembly elections were declared on May 4. Earlier, his vehicle was allegedly surrounded in Dum Dum, where protesters raised slogans calling him an “old thief”. Eggs were also thrown at his vehicle on that occasion.
No eggs were reportedly thrown at Roy during Tuesday’s protest. However, the veteran MP has now decided to take the airport incident to the Lok Sabha Speaker in Delhi.
