Sivasagar (Assam), 19 August (HS): Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare the Assam floods a national calamity and provide an adequate financial package for relief and reconstruction.

Addressing a press conference in Sivasagar after a three-day visit to flood-hit areas of Charaideo, Sivasagar and Nazira, Singh said over one million people had been affected, with extensive damage to homes, schools, roads, crops and livelihoods.

Singh demanded direct financial assistance to affected families, compensation for crop and livelihood losses, and flexibility in MPLAD funds for flood relief. He also called for a crackdown on illegal mining and deforestation, alleging that environmental damage had worsened the flood situation.

AAP Northeast In-charge Rajesh Sharma urged strict action against illegal transportation of coal, sand and stone across Assam’s borders.
