Amstelveen, 18 August (H.S.): One of world hockey’s most celebrated rivalries will be renewed when India and Pakistan face each other on August 19 in a crucial Pool D encounter of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026. With both teams’ campaigns at stake, India need at least a draw to remain in contention for the semifinals, while Pakistan must secure a win to keep their hopes alive.

The match at the Wagener Hockey Stadium will be more than a battle for bragging rights between two arch-rivals; it could also prove decisive for their respective World Cup campaigns.

India opened their campaign with a 3-1 victory over Wales but subsequently suffered a 2-4 defeat against England. They currently have three points and occupy second place in Pool D. Pakistan, meanwhile, earned one point after drawing with Wales and then suffered a 1-4 defeat against England.

Under the World Cup format, the top two teams from each pool advance to the next stage, while the teams finishing lower in the standings enter classification matches.

England have already secured their position among the top two after winning both of their matches. India, Pakistan and Wales are therefore competing for the remaining qualification spot. India would secure second place with at least a draw, while Pakistan and Wales need victories to keep their hopes alive.

India's Dominance Over Pakistan

India have enjoyed a highly impressive record against Pakistan in recent years. Since the 2016 South Asian Games final, the two sides have met 19 times, with India winning 17 matches and the remaining two ending in draws. Pakistan have therefore not beaten India in the past decade.

However, Indian head coach Craig Fulton wants his team to focus on the present rather than history. Speaking through Hockey India, he said, “There is always a rivalry and it never goes away. As a proud coach of the Indian team, whenever you play Pakistan, you want to win every time. That is natural.”

Fulton said Pakistan were investing more in their coaching structure and trying to strengthen their long-term plans.

“But we have to continue playing our style, make sure we take our opportunities and don’t give them any easy chances, because they have the ability to score goals from nothing,” he said.

He further stressed that India would have a good chance if they understood Pakistan’s strengths, prevented them from exploiting those areas and remained focused on the game rather than the intense atmosphere surrounding the rivalry.

Harmanpreet Singh Again at the Centre of India's Hopes

India’s hopes will once again rest heavily on captain and star drag-flicker Harmanpreet Singh. He has scored three goals in two matches so far, with all three coming from penalty corners. He remains one of the key strengths of India’s attacking unit.

India’s forwards have impressed with their ball control, movement and ability to create opportunities, but the team will need to become more clinical in front of goal. Against Pakistan, even a single missed opportunity could prove decisive.

Do-or-Die Clash for Pakistan

Pakistan have collected only one point from their opening two matches, making Wednesday’s encounter a virtual do-or-die contest for them. Only a victory can keep their semifinal hopes alive, and the Pakistani team is therefore expected to approach the game with an attacking mindset.

For India, the challenge will be to maintain composure and discipline amid the intense emotions surrounding the rivalry. Pakistan, meanwhile, will have an opportunity to rewrite the recent history of this fixture and revive their World Cup campaign.

With semifinal qualification and national pride at stake, the India-Pakistan encounter is expected to be one of the most eagerly anticipated matches of the tournament.
