Prayagraj, 18 Aug (HS): Based on forecasts from the India
Meteorological Department (IMD), technical officer Dr. Prateek Kumar said a red
alert for very heavy rain has been issued in Prayagraj and nearby regions for
August 19 and 20. Further heavy rain is expected on August 21 and 23.
Continuous rain can lead to waterlogging, nutrient runoff, and crop failure,
especially in low-lying and poorly drained fields.
Farmers have been advised to keep their fields' drainage
channels and outlets clear before the rains begin. Harvest vegetables, green
fodder, or mature crops before the rains, if possible. Provide support to tall
crops like pigeon pea, maize, and bananas to prevent them from falling due to
heavy rains and winds.
Avoid using fertilizers and pesticides during the rainy
season. After the rains stop, drain excess water from the fields and regularly
monitor crops for diseases and pests. Pay special attention to diseases such as
sheath rot in rice, sterility mosaic in pigeon pea, and charcoal rot and collar
rot in soybean.
Livestock farmers are advised to keep their animals in
elevated, dry, and well-ventilated areas and to secure feed. Fish farmers
should monitor pond water quality and fish activity.
