Chennai, 17 August (H.S.): The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly will resume its Budget session on Monday, with legislators set to examine allocations and question the government about spending priorities for 2026-27.

The House will assemble at 9.30 a.m. after a four-day recess for the Independence Day celebrations. The proceedings will mark the beginning of scrutiny of expenditure proposals placed before the Assembly.

Demands for grants relating to Health and Family Welfare, Revenue and Disaster Management, and Natural Calamities Mitigation will be taken up on the opening day. Members will debate their performance, funding and policy plans.

Healthcare infrastructure, vacancies in government hospitals, medical education, revenue services and disaster preparedness are expected to dominate the discussion. Legislators may also raise constituency-specific requirements and seek projects.

Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Minister Dr K.K. Arunraj and Revenue and Disaster Management Minister K.A. Sengottaiyan will respond to issues raised during the debate. The ministers are also likely to announce new schemes and departmental initiatives in their replies.

The grant-demand debate follows the general discussion on the State Budget and Agriculture Budget presented by the newly elected TDP government earlier this month.

The government tabled its first general Budget for 2026-27 on August 5, while the Agriculture Budget was presented the following day. Members of the ruling party and the Opposition debated both financial statements on August 7, 10 and 11.

Finance Minister Maria Wilson and Agriculture Minister Vinod replied to the debate on August 12, concluding the broader discussion on the government’s financial proposals.

Unlike the general Budget debate, the discussions beginning Monday will allow legislators to closely scrutinise allocations and implementation of schemes under individual departments.

The government is expected to use the proceedings to explain its department-wise development agenda. Demands concerning other departments will be considered during subsequent sittings according to the Assembly’s schedule.
