New Delhi, 17 August (H.S.): Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has received relief from the Supreme Court in a disproportionate assets case. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant stayed the proceedings pending against Rahul Gandhi before the Allahabad High Court.
Rahul Gandhi had approached the Supreme Court challenging orders passed in connection with several petitions filed before the Allahabad High Court, alleging that he possessed assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. He has also sought the transfer of the case pending before the Allahabad High Court to the Delhi High Court.
In May, the Allahabad High Court had directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to ascertain details of Rahul Gandhi’s assets.
In the Allahabad High Court, Karnataka BJP worker S. Vignesh had filed a petition alleging that Rahul Gandhi possessed assets disproportionate to his income. While hearing the petition, the High Court directed that the allegations made by the petitioner be verified.
The High Court had also observed that the CBI or ED could take appropriate action in accordance with law. During a hearing in July, the Allahabad High Court expressed dissatisfaction with the CBI’s affidavit, observing that it was not in accordance with the court’s directions.
