New Delhi, 15 August (H.S.): The Indian men’s hockey team will begin its FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 campaign against Wales on Saturday, with captain Harmanpreet Singh making it clear that the side is determined to give everything in its pursuit of the title. India have been waiting 51 years for another World Cup triumph, having last won the tournament in 1975.

Speaking to JioStar, Harmanpreet said the World Cup holds immense significance for the entire team and that the players have complete faith in their preparation and ability to deliver.

“The World Cup means a lot to all of us because we do not know what comes next. We have several experienced players in the squad and this is a great opportunity for us. Given the hard work we have put in and the way we have trained, we believe we can certainly achieve it,” he said.

“Our only goal is to give our best and win a medal. Winning consecutive medals at Tokyo and Paris was certainly very inspiring for us. We have come here as underdogs. This is the right opportunity for us to show the world what India can do and what our potential is. Hopefully, we can bring the trophy home,” he added.

Harmanpreet acknowledged that achieving the objective would be difficult, but said the team was prepared for the challenge.

“It is easy to say, but the journey will be difficult and challenging. We are ready. The team trusts one another and our mindset is positive. It does not matter who scores or who defends, as long as we win as a team. We will give it everything we have,” the captain said.

Strong Defence Will Be India’s Primary Focus

Harmanpreet said the team’s first priority throughout the tournament would be to maintain a strong defensive structure.

“Our first priority will be defence. If we defend well throughout the tournament, we will be closer to the objective for which we have come here. We have worked very well in this area,” he said.

He explained that the team had prepared for different defensive structures, including a full press, half-court press and low press, with individual meetings and team discussions held with the players.

“When you defend well, you create more opportunities to enter the opposition’s circle. Converting 50-50 chances into goals, receiving the ball correctly under pressure and making intelligent decisions inside the circle — whether it is an attempt on goal or earning a penalty corner — will be extremely important,” Harmanpreet said.

Strong Bond With Manpreet Singh

The captain also highlighted his longstanding relationship and understanding with experienced midfielder Manpreet Singh.

“Manpreet paaji has been our senior. We have been together since the junior level. Since then, our relationship, trust and understanding have become very strong. We have played together for so many years, and I just want to thank him for showing his trust and confidence in me,” he said.

Harmanpreet said he, Manpreet, Mandeep and Dilpreet often spend time together both away from the field and during training camps.

“Our understanding between the defenders and midfielders on the field is excellent. We know how to pass in certain situations and how to communicate through eye contact. We also stay close in defence, so there is no lack of communication,” he said.

“Manpreet and Mandeep are playing their fourth World Cup, while this is my third. When a senior player takes responsibility during difficult moments, it boosts the confidence of the entire team. I am happy that we have experienced players in every position who provide balance — Mandeep in the forward line, Manpreet in midfield and us in defence,” Harmanpreet added.

No Opponent to Be Taken Lightly

India are placed in Pool D alongside Wales, England and Pakistan. Harmanpreet said the team would not underestimate any opponent.

“Perhaps most teams have a largely man-to-man style. Pakistan uses a combination of zonal and man-to-man marking. We have played against them in the Pro League and identified the areas where we need to improve,” he said.

“We have also played against Wales in the Commonwealth Games. We are analysing video footage and discussing the key points with everyone. There are no easy opponents at a World Cup, so we cannot take anyone lightly. We are focusing on one match at a time and not thinking too far ahead,” he added.

Whether the opponent is Wales, England or Pakistan, Harmanpreet said India’s objective would remain the same — to perform at their best and execute their plans effectively.

Keeping Emotions Under Control Against Pakistan

With Pakistan also in their pool, Harmanpreet urged the players to remain composed and avoid being overwhelmed by emotions.

“The plan is simple — keep your mind calm. Do not overthink and do not get excessively excited. The spectators also play a role, so we have to take that atmosphere positively,” he said.

“The main priority is to remain focused on the game and not get distracted by other factors. We cannot lose our rhythm or change our plans. For those 60 minutes, everyone has a responsibility, so controlling our emotions and playing in a disciplined manner will be important,” the captain added.

India will face Wales at 4:30 pm IST on Saturday in their Pool D opener. The match will be broadcast on Star Sports and streamed on JioHotstar.
