New Delhi, 15 August (H.S.): India achieved a major milestone in Test cricket on Saturday as it took the field against Sri Lanka in the first Test in Galle, becoming the third country in the world to play 600 Test matches.

Only England, with 1,097 Tests, and Australia, with 883 Tests, had previously reached the landmark of 600 or more Test matches. In their first 599 Tests, India recorded 186 victories, 188 defeats and 224 draws. Its win-loss ratio stood at 0.989, while its overall win percentage was 31.13.

India ranks fifth in terms of total Test victories. Australia lead the list with 426 wins, followed by England with 405, South Africa with 191 and the West Indies with 187.

India's Test Journey Began in 1932

India played its first Test match against England at Lord's in 1932. Led by C.K. Nayudu, India lost the historic encounter by 158 runs.

India played its 100th Test in Birmingham in 1967, its 200th Test in Lahore in 1982 and its 300th Test in Ahmedabad in 1996. The 400th Test was played in Kingston in 2006, while India's 500th Test came in Kanpur in 2016, where India defeated New Zealand by 197 runs.
