Galle, 15 August (H.S.): India’s KL Rahul retired hurt on 77 on the opening day of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle on Saturday after experiencing discomfort in his arm.

Rahul was unbeaten on 77 off 162 deliveries and had been consolidating India’s innings alongside Devdutt Padikkal. The pair put together an impressive 150-run partnership for the third wicket off 255 balls.

Rahul, 34, appeared to be in discomfort during the tea interval and was seen gesturing towards his arm. When the third session began, he returned to the field to continue batting with Padikkal but soon called for the physiotherapist.

Despite receiving treatment, Rahul continued to experience discomfort and subsequently walked off the field. He was later also seen having difficulty while climbing the stairs.

Rahul’s retirement hurt has come as a setback for India, which had been building a strong position through his partnership with Padikkal. However, there has been no official update yet on the severity of his injury.

The medical team is expected to assess Rahul’s condition before determining whether he will be able to resume batting later in the innings or participate in the remainder of the Test.
