Kolkata, 14 August (H.S.) : The Kolkata Police has decided to set up a dedicated police outpost at the Kalighat Temple to strengthen security and ensure the safety and convenience of devotees visiting the prominent religious site. Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand issued a directive to this effect on Thursday.

This is the first time that the Kolkata Police has decided to establish a separate police outpost specifically for a religious place. According to police sources, the decision has been taken in view of the large number of devotees visiting the temple and the need to maintain law and order in and around the premises.

Security concerns, including the possibility of sabotage or terrorist attacks, have also been taken into consideration. The police commissioner’s directive noted that Kalighat Temple has faced various security-related risks in the past, prompting the authorities to strengthen the security mechanism.

Initially, the new Kalighat Police Outpost will have a team of 20 personnel headed by an Inspector-rank officer. The team will include two Sub-Inspectors or Sergeants, eight constables and five women constables.

The outpost will function under the jurisdiction of Kalighat Police Station. An Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) will be responsible for its administrative supervision, while the Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) will oversee the overall functioning and security arrangements.
