WASHINGTON, August 13 (HS/RIA Novosti) - Officials in US President Donald Trump's administration are concerned about the lack of a clear strategy for the conflict with Iran, Politico reported, citing officials.

I don't see a way out of this, one source was quoted as saying on Wednesday, adding that the administration fundamentally misunderstands the Iranian government.

Former Trump Middle East adviser Elliott Abrams described the situation as extremely dangerous, while former senior Pentagon official Dan Shapiro said Washington had backed itself into a dead end, with literally only bad options remaining.

According to the report, the White House has yet to define what would constitute victory in the conflict and has repeatedly shifted its objectives. The initial goal was to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, but the administration’s focus has since shifted toward lifting the Iranian blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

In early August, Trump announced that he had called off attacks on Iran in light of the looming peace deal, which includes opening the Strait of Hormuz and agreements on the nuclear program. The Iranian Foreign Ministry said that Iran and Oman had agreed on the geographical details of the route for ships to navigate through the strait.
