Kolkata, 13 August (H.S.) : In a fresh development in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case, former Panihati Trinamool Congress MLA Nirmal Ghosh has been arrested from Odisha. Ghosh has been accused of allegedly playing a role in the forced cremation of the victim’s body following the incident at the RG Kar hospital.
According to police sources, the victim’s father lodged an FIR against Ghosh and two others at Khardah police station in North 24 Parganas on Monday. Police said Ghosh was arrested on the basis of the FIR.
Sources said Ghosh left for neighbouring Odisha shortly after the fresh FIR was registered and had allegedly been staying there to evade arrest. He was reportedly using a new SIM card to avoid being tracked while remaining in contact with a few close associates.
Police reportedly traced his movements through the tower location of the mobile phone on Tuesday and subsequently intensified the search. At around 9 a.m. on Thursday, a police team raided a hotel in the vicinity of Puri and arrested Ghosh from the premises.
Police are now questioning Ghosh and investigating his alleged role in the events surrounding the cremation of the victim’s body. The investigation is being conducted on the basis of the newly registered FIR, and further action is expected based on the evidence gathered.
