Quetta, 12 August (H.S.):

An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale struck parts of Pakistan’s Balochistan province on Wednesday morning, triggering tremors in Zhob and Chaman. There were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage.

The National Seismic Monitoring Centre confirmed the earthquake and said it occurred at a depth of 15 kilometres.

According to a report by The News, a spokesperson for Pakistan’s National Seismic Monitoring Centre said the earthquake was felt in several parts of Balochistan, including Zhob and Chaman. The epicentre was located approximately 122 kilometres northeast of Zhob.

No casualties or damage were reported immediately following the tremors. Authorities, however, continued to monitor the situation for possible aftershocks or reports of damage.

Balochistan has experienced several significant earthquakes in recent years. On October 7, 2021, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the region, with its epicentre near Harnai at a depth of around 15 kilometres. The earthquake occurred at approximately 3:20 a.m. when most people were asleep.

The 2021 earthquake caused extensive damage, with several buildings collapsing. At least 20 people were killed and more than 300 others were injured. Repeated aftershocks in the following days prompted the deployment of rescue teams and security personnel to affected areas.

Chaman was again affected by a 5.4-magnitude earthquake in March 2024. The tremor struck at around 5:35 a.m., with the epicentre located approximately 150 kilometres southwest of Quetta. Tremors were also felt in Killa Abdullah, Nushki, Pishin, Dalbandin, Chagai and Quetta.

Authorities have not reported any major impact from Wednesday’s earthquake so far.
