Thiruvananthapuram, 11 August (H.S):Educational institutions functioning as relief camps in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Kottayam districts have been given a holiday on Tuesday as several areas continue to deal with waterlogging following heavy rain.

In Kottayam district, the District Collector announced a holiday for all educational institutions where relief camps are currently functioning. The decision has been taken to facilitate relief operations and ensure the safety of students and people accommodated in the camps.

In Pathanamthitta district, the holiday applies to 10 schools in Thiruvalla taluk and two anganwadis in Kozhencherry taluk. Authorities said the affected institutions would be permitted to conduct classes online wherever feasible.

Alappuzha district authorities have meanwhile declared a holiday for all educational institutions in Kuttanad taluk on Tuesday due to continuing waterlogging in several areas.

Officials said the decision was taken considering the safety of students and the difficulties they could face in travelling to educational institutions. Several low-lying areas in Kuttanad remain inundated following the spell of intense rain over the past few days.

The holiday in Kuttanad will cover all educational institutions, including professional colleges, as well as anganwadis and tuition centres across the taluk.

However, examinations that have already been scheduled will be conducted as planned, and there will be no change in the examination timetable, authorities clarified.

Relief camps have been opened in affected areas as authorities continue to assist families displaced or impacted by flooding and waterlogging.

District administrations are closely monitoring the situation, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Officials have advised residents and students to follow instructions issued by local authorities as rain-related conditions continue to affect parts of central Kerala.
