Guwahati, 10 August (HS): BJP Assam Pradesh spokesperson Dr. Zafreen Mehjabin on Monday praised the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led Assam government for its proactive response to the 2026 floods, particularly the strengthening of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).
According to the SDRF Flood Status Report, the force rescued 15,085 people in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat between July 19 and August 8. It also rescued 184 animals and recovered 16 bodies.
Dr. Mehjabin highlighted the induction of 40 new high-speed rescue boats before the flood season, saying the move strengthened the state’s preparedness and rapid-response capacity. She also lauded SDRF personnel, district administrations, police and other emergency agencies for their efforts in difficult conditions.
She said the government’s approach reflected a shift from reactive relief to anticipatory disaster management, aimed at making Assam more resilient to recurring floods.----------
