Nagpur, 10 Aug (HS): The NEERI (National

Environmental Engineering Research Institute) Nagpur took initiative to support

the flood-affected communities in Assam, in supplying the safe drinking water

where conventional water supply system may be disrupted or contaminated.

NERRI and an institution under CSIR (Council of Scientific

and Industrial Research). NEERI-ZAR instant water filters were demonstrated and

distributed in Jonakimondal village in Jorhat district proving an immediate and

practical solution for access to potable water during emergencies.

As a part of the initiative 70 households and 20

community-based NEERI-ZAR units were handed over through the Jorhat

Commissioner.

The units were formally handed over by Director of

CSIR-NEERI Dr S Venkata Mohan and CSIR-NEERI Director of CSIR-NEIST (North-East

Institute of Science and Technology), Jorhat.

The initiative represents A collaborative efforts of

the institutions under CSIR combining NEERI’s water treatment technology with

NEIST’s local infrastructure and field capabilities for rapid deployment in the

floor-affected areas.

All the units were assembled at NEIST, Jorhat using

the locally available material in just two days. Key advantages of NEERI-ZAR

are that it is suitable for emergent situation, does not require electricity

and can be rapidly deployed in households and communities. The technology is

effective in treatment of any type of available contaminated water.
