New Delhi, 10 August (H.S.):

The Congress on Monday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of neglecting the tribal community on the occasion of World Tribal Day.

Congress Tribal Department chairman Vikrant Bhuria alleged that the BJP remembers the tribal population primarily during elections. In a post on social media platform X, Bhuria said that despite August 9 being observed as World Tribal Day, there was no message for the tribal community from President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah or the chief ministers of BJP-ruled tribal-majority states.

Bhuria questioned whether August 9, the date observed as World Tribal Day, was not significant for the BJP and whether the party remembered the tribal community only when elections were approaching.

He said the tribal community would remember the alleged neglect and keep account of how it was treated.

World Tribal Day is observed every year on August 9. The occasion coincides with the United Nations’ International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, which seeks to raise awareness about the rights, cultures and contributions of indigenous communities worldwide.
