Bidar, 10 August (H.S.):Residents of several villages in Humnabad taluk of Karnataka’s Bidar district have decided to stage a protest on August 11, demanding urgent action over the alleged discharge of untreated industrial effluents into the Guruganga-Viraja rivulet and contamination of groundwater and drinking water sources.

The decision was taken at a meeting in Maniknagar on August 9, where villagers, farmers, community representatives and elected representatives discussed the worsening condition of water sources in the area. Concerns were raised over the possible impact of the pollution on public health, agriculture and the environment.

Residents alleged that untreated industrial effluents had changed the appearance and quality of water in the Guruganga-Viraja rivulet, leaving it dark, foul-smelling and oily. They claimed that contamination had also spread to groundwater and drinking water sources used by several communities.

Maniknagar, Gadwanti, Molkera, Dhummansur and Hudgi are among the villages where residents have raised concerns over water quality. Villagers fear that continued contamination could have serious long-term consequences for families dependent on local water sources.

The protesters have demanded that the Bidar district administration conduct an investigation to identify the source of the alleged pollution and take immediate steps to stop the discharge of untreated industrial waste into the rivulet.

They have also sought scientific testing of the rivulet, groundwater and drinking water sources to determine the extent of contamination. A comprehensive study of the possible impact on public health has also been demanded, with particular attention to vulnerable groups, including pregnant women and children.

Residents have further called for a permanent monitoring mechanism to ensure industries comply with environmental regulations and prevent further contamination.

The August 11 protest is expected to focus on securing immediate administrative intervention, scientific assessment of water quality and long-term measures to protect water sources and the health of communities across the affected villages.
