Guwahati, 10 August (HS): Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said the recent clash between residents of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh in Dhemaji district has been “almost resolved” following a shooting incident that left several people injured and heightened tension along the inter-state border.

Sarma said the Assam government has sent a minister, the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police to hold discussions with their counterparts in Arunachal Pradesh to defuse the situation and prevent further escalation.

Around 18 people were reportedly injured after unidentified persons allegedly opened fire from the Arunachal Pradesh side during a clash at Mingmang village along the Assam-Arunachal border. Four of the injured are said to be in critical condition and were later shifted to Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh for treatment.

The clash reportedly followed a dispute over alleged encroachment on land. The latest incident came after a youth from the Mising community was allegedly shot near Kangku Circle in Arunachal Pradesh’s Lower Siang district, which borders Assam’s Dhemaji district.

According to preliminary reports, the youth had gone missing and was later found with an injury to his leg. The identity of the person who allegedly shot him and the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear.

Following the shooting, clashes broke out between residents of Dhemaji in Assam and Lower Siang in Arunachal Pradesh, raising concerns over renewed tension in the border area. Tensions were also reportedly witnessed between members of the Mising and Galo communities.

The Assam government has initiated coordination with Arunachal Pradesh authorities to contain the situation and restore peace along the border.----------
