Guwahati, 09 July (HS): Assam Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah will present the state's full Budget for the financial year 2026–27 in the Legislative Assembly on Friday. The ongoing Budget Session of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly began on July 6 and is scheduled to continue until July 31.
This will be Baruah's maiden full Budget after assuming charge as Finance Minister in the newly formed government. The Budget has generated considerable public interest, with expectations that it will focus on development, employment generation and welfare.
Speaking to the media during a programme at Sonapur, Baruah said the government had successfully utilised nearly 90% of the previous Budget allocation. He stated that the primary objective this year is to ensure 100% utilisation of allocated funds so that development projects and welfare schemes deliver maximum benefits at the grassroots level. He also said the Budget has been prepared after incorporating suggestions from different sections of society.
The Finance Minister said the government aims to address the aspirations of the people through a practical and people-centric Budget. Commenting on the ongoing hill cutting for the proposed Ring Road project at Khetri Nalgedera in Dimoria, Baruah stressed that development and environmental conservation must go hand in hand, adding that infrastructure growth should not come at the cost of ecological damage.
The 2026–27 Budget is expected to include measures to strengthen flagship welfare schemes, with the possibility of enhancing monthly assistance under the Orunodoi scheme and expanding its beneficiary base. It may also outline a roadmap for filling vacant government posts, introduce fresh startup support for young entrepreneurs, allocate higher capital investment for industrial infrastructure in view of recent investments such as the semiconductor plant and provide special provisions for flood management, embankment projects and relief measures for farmers affected by this year's floods.-----------
