New Delhi, 06 July (H.S.):
The Election Commission on Monday announced by-elections for three Rajya Sabha seats from West Bengal, with polling scheduled for July 24. The vacancies arose following the resignations of three Trinamool Congress members from the Upper House.
According to the Election Commission, the notification for the bypolls will be issued on Tuesday, and nominations can be filed until July 14. Polling will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 24, while the counting of votes will begin at 5 p.m. the same day.
The three vacant seats were earlier held by Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, Sushmita Dev, and Prakash Chik Baraik, who resigned from the Rajya Sabha on June 8, June 10, and June 11, respectively, despite their terms being valid until 2029.
The three leaders also resigned from the Trinamool Congress along with relinquishing their Rajya Sabha membership.
It is noteworthy that since the political change in West Bengal, several leaders have left the Trinamool Congress.
