The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports regarding the deaths of seven migrant workers and injuries to five others after a massive granite boulder collapsed at a quarry in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The Commission has issued a notice to the state's Chief Secretary, seeking a detailed report on the incident within two weeks.

According to media reports, the accident occurred on July 2 while two stone-crushing machines were operating at the quarry. A huge granite rock suddenly collapsed, killing seven migrant workers and injuring five others.

At least 16 workers were reportedly present at the quarry site when the incident occurred.

The NHRC observed that the incident prima facie points to possible negligence on the part of the quarry owner. It noted that the exact cause of the accident is currently under investigation, and the authorities are conducting an inquiry to ascertain the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
