Kozhikode, 05 July (H.S.):A simmering rift within the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) came into the open after the Muslim Students Federation (MSF), the party's student wing, launched a sharp attack on Muslim League ministers, accusing them of sidelining long-serving party workers and undermining internal democratic processes in government appointments.
The criticism was contained in a resolution adopted by the MSF Malappuram district committee, which alleged that ministers had filled staff positions based on personal preferences rather than recommendations made through the party's organisational structure.
According to the resolution, leaders and activists who had spent the past decade spearheading protests and working for the party at the grassroots level were deliberately overlooked during the appointment process. The student wing alleged that loyal workers who had stood by the party during difficult times were denied opportunities, while individuals with little or no contribution to the organisation were rewarded with key positions.
The MSF further accused the ministers of weakening the party's internal democratic mechanisms by ignoring the recommendations of the League's appointment sub-committee. It alleged that the committee had effectively been reduced to a mere formality, with appointments being made unilaterally.
The resolution also criticised what it described as a double standard within the party. While affiliated organisations were mobilised to lead protests, campaign on the streets and defend the party's political positions, those who had made such sacrifices were allegedly ignored when it came to distributing responsibilities and government-linked appointments.
The student wing claimed that the official lists of recommended candidates submitted by the Muslim Youth League, MSF, Kerala School Teachers' Union (KSTU) and the Confederation of Kerala College Teachers (CKCT) were rejected by the ministers without adequate justification.
Calling the concentration of appointments in the hands of a select few unacceptable, the MSF said the present approach had caused widespread disappointment among party workers who expected recognition after the party came to power. It urged the Muslim League leadership to intervene immediately, review the appointments and ensure that deserving grassroots activists receive fair consideration.
The resolution was presented in the presence of IUML Malappuram district general secretary P. Abdul Hameed, highlighting growing discontent within sections of the party's organisational network over the handling of staff appointments by its ministers.
