Guwahati, 05 July (HS): India will host the meeting of Heads of BRICS Anti-Drug Agencies in Guwahati on July 6–7 under its BRICS Presidency. Senior officials and heads of narcotics control agencies from all BRICS member countries will participate to strengthen institutional cooperation and enhance operational coordination in combating drug trafficking.
The meeting will focus on emerging challenges such as synthetic drugs, new psychoactive substances (NPS), darknet-enabled trafficking, and cryptocurrency-based financial transactions. Discussions will also cover intelligence sharing, capacity building, financial intelligence, data analytics, and the use of advanced interdiction technologies to tackle transnational narcotics networks.
India views the meeting as an important step towards transforming BRICS anti-drug cooperation into a more structured and result-oriented framework. As BRICS Chair, India will promote collaboration through information sharing on clandestine laboratories and synthetic drugs, improved monitoring of precursor chemicals, joint training programmes, exchange of best practices, and stronger intelligence cooperation.
The event will also provide India an opportunity to showcase its intensified efforts against drug trafficking and substance abuse, including the recently launched Vision Document on Drug Control (2026–2029) aimed at strengthening institutional capacity. The two-day meeting will conclude with the adoption of a joint declaration.
India's 2026 BRICS Presidency is based on the theme, Building Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.--------
