New Delhi, 05 July (H.S.):
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday said that the Delhi Government has launched Mission Kayakalp with the objective of transforming government schools in the national capital into safe, clean, modern and inspiring learning spaces, rather than limiting them to being centres of education. Under the special initiative, extensive infrastructure development works are being carried out in selected government schools across various districts to strengthen basic facilities and provide students with an improved learning environment.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Chief Minister said that Mission Kayakalp is being implemented through the combined efforts of district administrations, the Education Department, institutions supporting projects under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), various social organisations, market associations and local communities. She said that active public participation, along with government resources, is bringing about rapid and positive transformation in government schools.
The Chief Minister said significant improvements are already visible in government schools across different districts under Mission Kayakalp. In North Delhi, six government schools were inspected, following which two schools were selected for redevelopment. At a cost of approximately Rs 16.20 lakh, the sensory park for children with special needs at Shankaracharya Marg has been renovated, while RO plants and water coolers have been installed. At the government school in Roop Nagar, the physics laboratory has been modernised to strengthen practical science education.
She said that in South Delhi, extensive improvement works have been carried out at Ramanujan Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya in Mehrauli at a cost of around Rs 48.73 lakh and at Sarvodaya Co-Educational Senior Secondary School in Qutub Mehrauli at an estimated cost of Rs 98.58 lakh. The projects include renovation of toilets, replacement of sanitary fittings, repair of leakages and damaged plaster, and repainting of entire school buildings with high-quality weather-resistant paint. In addition, school campuses and corridors have been cleaned and beautified, two modern water coolers have been installed, and plantation drives have been undertaken to create greener campuses.
The Chief Minister further said that government schools in Mohan Garden and Janakpuri in West Delhi are also undergoing major infrastructure upgrades under the mission. At Mohan Garden Government School, works worth approximately Rs 77.71 lakh include roof repairs and waterproofing, renovation of drinking water facilities, installation of a rainwater harvesting system, improvement of sewer lines and staff toilets, along with several civil and electrical works. At the Government Senior Secondary School for Girls (GSKV) in Janakpuri, projects worth about Rs 38.77 lakh include waterproofing of the multipurpose hall, installation of new RO plants and water coolers, replacement of toilet doors, and strengthening of the electrical infrastructure.
Rekha Gupta said that in the North-East district, extensive renovation works have been completed at the government school in Gokalpur at a cost of approximately Rs 6.70 lakh and at Mani Ben Patel Bharatiya Mahila Sarvodaya Vidyalaya in Shahdara at a cost of around Rs 2.90 lakh. The work included renovation and deep cleaning of toilets, replacement of sanitary fittings and old taps, repair of seepage and damaged plaster, and repainting of school buildings with high-quality paint.
She added that plantation drives have been undertaken to beautify and green the campuses, new water coolers have been installed after upgrading drinking water facilities, and new chairs have been provided for the Shahdara school's library. Portraits of Mani Ben Patel and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel have also been installed in the Shahdara school to inspire students, making both campuses cleaner, safer and more attractive learning environments.
The Chief Minister said that multiple development works worth around Rs 8 lakh have also been completed at the Sawda Ghevra Community Boys Senior Secondary School in the Outer North district. These include repairs to school buildings, restoration of damaged plaster, repainting of both primary and senior wings, construction of a covered shed, establishment of a space laboratory, and improvement of basic infrastructure.
She said the project was implemented with the support of the Mundka Industrial Association, district administration and officials from the Sub-Divisional Magistrate's office. Regular inspections and continuous monitoring by the district administration ensured quality execution and timely completion of the works. All projects were carried out in coordination with the district administration, Education Department, Public Works Department (PWD), local agencies and School Management Committees.
The Chief Minister emphasised that Mission Kayakalp is not merely a beautification programme but a comprehensive initiative aimed at the overall transformation of government schools. Under the mission, priority is being given to repairing school buildings, painting and whitewashing walls, renovating dilapidated toilets, installing RO plants and water coolers to ensure access to clean drinking water, modernising science laboratories, creating facilities for children with special needs, beautifying school campuses, increasing green cover, and providing students with a safe, positive and inspiring educational environment.
