Hooghly, 05 July (H.S.): A civic volunteer was killed after being hit by a speeding truck while on duty in West Bengal's Hooghly district. The accident took place late on Saturday night in the Jayrampur area of Arambagh. The police have detained the truck and its driver in connection with the incident.

The deceased has been identified as Utpal Singh (32), a resident of Bahukhedail village under Arandi-II Gram Panchayat in Arambagh.

According to police and local sources, three to four civic volunteers had been deployed in Jayrampur to maintain security during Kali Puja celebrations. During the duty hours, a truck travelling from Arambagh towards Tarakeswar allegedly lost control while attempting to overtake another vehicle and rammed into Singh, who was on duty.

Singh sustained critical injuries in the collision. Local residents rushed him to Arambagh Prafulla Chandra Sen Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Family members reached the hospital after receiving news of the incident. Scenes of grief unfolded as relatives broke down after learning of his death.

Senior police officials, including Arambagh SDPO Sandeep Nandy and Inspector-in-Charge of Arambagh Police Station Surajit Chand, visited the hospital and took stock of the situation.

The police said the truck involved in the accident and its driver have been detained. The body was sent for post-mortem examination on Sunday, and an investigation into the incident is underway.
