Egypt Defeat Australia in Penalty Shootout to Reach World Cup Round of 16 for the First Time

ARLINGTON (TEXAS), 04 July (H.S.): Egypt created history at the FIFA World Cup 2026 by defeating Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout in their Round of 32 match on Friday, securing their first-ever knockout victory and a place in the Round of 16. The match ended 1-1 after regulation and extra time before Egypt prevailed in the shootout.

Hossam Abdelmaguid emerged as Egypt's hero by converting the decisive penalty to seal a memorable victory. Egypt will now face defending champions Argentina in the Round of 16.

Captain Mohamed Salah described the triumph as one of the most memorable moments of his career. Speaking after the match, Salah said there could be no greater joy than seeing his team celebrate such a historic achievement and added that he was proud to share the moment with the people of Egypt.

Egypt took the lead in the 13th minute through Emam Ashour, who scored with a well-placed header.

Australia equalised in the 55th minute through an own goal by Egyptian defender Mohamed Hany. The defender became the first player at the 2026 FIFA World Cup to score two own goals during the tournament.

Neither side was able to find a winner during the remainder of normal time or in extra time, sending the contest into a penalty shootout.

Australia endured a disappointing shootout as Harry Souttar missed the opening penalty, while 18-year-old Lucas Harrington struck the crossbar with the team's fourth attempt.

For Egypt, Mahmoud Saber, Rami Rabia, Mohamed Salah and Hossam Abdelmaguid all converted their penalties to secure a landmark victory. Jackson Irvine and Awer Mabil were the only Australian players to score from the spot.

The defeat extended Australia's disappointing record in FIFA World Cup knockout matches, marking its third consecutive elimination at that stage after defeats to Italy in 2006 and Argentina in 2022.

For Egypt, competing in its fourth FIFA World Cup, the victory marked the nation's first-ever win in a knockout match, making it one of the country's most significant achievements on the global football stage.
