Kansas City, 04 July (H.S.):
Colombia booked their place in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after defeating Ghana 1-0 in their Round of 32 encounter on Saturday, thanks to an early goal from Jhon Arias. With the victory, Colombia advanced to the pre-quarterfinals, where they will face Switzerland in Vancouver on July 8.
The only goal of the match came in the 14th minute when Jhon Arias finished from close range after connecting with a precise cross from Luis Suárez. Suárez made an immediate impact after coming on as a substitute for the injured Jhon Córdoba, providing the assist just moments after entering the field.
Colombia had an opportunity to double their lead in the second half. In the 56th minute, Luis Díaz found the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review, which ruled him offside.
Colombia dominated much of the contest and created several scoring opportunities. However, Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi produced an impressive performance, making at least three crucial saves to keep his side in the match and prevent a heavier defeat.
Despite Ghana's resistance, Colombia maintained their narrow advantage until the final whistle to secure a place in the last 16, where they will take on Switzerland for a spot in the quarterfinals.
