Thiruvananthapuram, 04 July (H.S.):The Kerala Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has dismissed reports claiming that the state's artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled traffic enforcement cameras have stopped functioning, clarifying that the cameras continue to record traffic violations despite a temporary disruption in the issuance of penalty notices.

The clarification comes amid widespread speculation that the AI camera network had become non-functional after Keltron, the agency maintaining the system, allegedly suspended services over pending payments from the state government. The MVD has rejected these claims, stating that the cameras remain operational and continue to capture and store images of traffic violations across the state.

However, officials acknowledged that the department is currently unable to issue electronic challans to motorists because the internet connectivity required to transmit violation data to the MVD's central control room has been interrupted. As a result, fines cannot be imposed at present even though violations are being detected and recorded.

According to the MVD, all images and data captured by the AI cameras are being securely stored on the servers. Once the network connection is restored, the pending records will be transferred to the department's control room, enabling authorities to process the violations and issue challans in bulk.

The department stressed that the current technical issue does not affect the cameras' ability to monitor roads or detect offences. It also cautioned motorists against assuming that traffic violations would go unnoticed during the disruption.

In a public advisory, the MVD urged road users to continue following traffic regulations irrespective of the status of enforcement cameras.

Whether cameras are functioning or not, motorists should obey traffic rules for their own safety and the safety of others. The recorded violations will be processed once the technical issues are resolved, the department said.

The MVD did not specify when the internet connectivity would be restored but assured that enforcement action on all recorded violations would resume once the system becomes fully operational.
