Chennai, July 31 (HS): Tamil Nadu will approach the Supreme Court to secure its allocated share of Cauvery water following the Cauvery Water Management Authority's (CWMA) decision directing Karnataka to release water to the state, Law Minister R. Nirmal Kumar said on Friday.

Speaking to reporters, Kumar said the state would pursue legal remedies to ensure that Tamil Nadu receives its due share of Cauvery water, alleging that Karnataka has repeatedly failed to comply with directions on water release.

The CWMA recently upheld the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee's recommendation directing Karnataka to release 3,500 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu for 15 days.

The minister said Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is consulting legal experts and other stakeholders to finalise the state's legal strategy. He said the government is expected to announce its decision within a week.

According to Kumar, the options under consideration include approaching the Supreme Court, pursuing remedies through the Cauvery dispute resolution mechanism, holding inter-state negotiations and taking up the matter with the Union government.
