New Delhi, 31 July (H.S.): Indian Railways has created history by transporting a live human heart safely from Surat to Ahmedabad for the first time through the Vande Bharat Express. The heart will be transplanted at the U.N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre in Ahmedabad. The live heart was brought to Ahmedabad onboard train number 20901 Mumbai Central–Gandhinagar Capital Vande Bharat Express.

The entire operation was extremely time-sensitive, as the heart had to reach the hospital within the required timeframe. A green corridor was created by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Gujarat Police to transport the heart from Ahmedabad Railway Station to the hospital without any interruption, ensuring that the transplant procedure was not delayed.

Ahmedabad Divisional Railway Manager Ved Prakash described the achievement as a proud moment for Indian Railways and said that every minute is crucial during such life-saving missions. He said the successful completion of the operation was made possible due to seamless coordination between Indian Railways, the RPF, Gujarat Police and the medical teams. He added that contributing to saving a human life is not merely a responsibility for Indian Railways but also a supreme commitment towards service and humanity.

According to the Railways, the speed, punctuality and reliability of the Vande Bharat Express played a vital role in ensuring the success of the mission. The achievement highlights that Indian Railways is not limited to passenger and freight transportation but is also emerging as an effective support system for life-saving healthcare services during emergency situations.

Various departments of Indian Railways, the Railway Protection Force, Gujarat Police, doctors, organ transplant coordinators and other concerned officials and employees played a significant role in the successful execution of the mission. The Railways stated that rapid and efficient coordination among all agencies enabled the challenging operation to be completed successfully.

Indian Railways said the achievement reflects its commitment towards providing fast, safe and reliable services while also contributing to the preservation of human life.
