Washington, 31 July (H.S.): A resolution aimed at increasing congressional oversight of US military action against Iran failed to secure the required support in the United States Senate. During Thursday's vote, the measure received 49 votes in favour and 50 against, preventing it from advancing further.

The resolution was introduced to strengthen congressional oversight over the President's authority to undertake military action. Its sponsors sought to move the measure to the full Senate for detailed debate and a final vote. However, the proposal failed to gain sufficient support to proceed.

Had the resolution been approved, the US President could have been required to obtain congressional authorisation before undertaking any large-scale future military action against Iran. With the proposal failing to advance, the existing legal and procedural framework governing presidential military powers remains unchanged.

The Senate debate comes amid continuing tensions between the United States and Iran and is being viewed in the broader context of bilateral relations and regional security in the Middle East.
