MOSCOW, July 31 (HS/RIA Novosti) - The European Union has agreed on plans to establish a Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in the eastern city of Benghazi, EU Ambassador to Libya Nicola Orlando said.

We finalised the procedures to establish a Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Benghazi under Operation IRINI, with funding from Italy and Malta. The Centre, together with dedicated training by IRINI and EUBAM Libya, will strengthen Libya’s capacity to conduct search and rescue operations at sea in line with international standards and human rights, Orlando said on X on Thursday

More than 1,000 migrants died off the coast of Libya in 2025 while attempting to cross the Mediterranean, according to the International Organization for Migration. Every day, hundreds of migrants from sub-Saharan Africa attempt to cross from Tunisia and Libya to Europe by boat.
