(HS): Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stressed the need for modern drainage

system following flooding in Nagpur City, which received 110 mm rains in less

than two hours on Tuesday and 180 mm during the day. Water logging were

reported from schools and low-lying areas. All the underpasses connecting East

Nagpur to West Nagpur were filled with four to six feet water.

The flyovers were

full of vehicles as the traffic at various places in the city were blocked due

to flooding. The Disaster Management, Fire Brigade and other agencies had to

toil for hours to rescue the children stranded in their schools.

Fadnavis said

that although the local administration rescued all of them safely, the issue of

drainage in such a situation is being raised. The changing pattern of rains has

also posed serious problems before the administration. The drainage system

prepared with 20 to 25 years of development in the future, never imagined such

a heavy downpour in about 90 minutes. The incomplete construction work has also

resulted in water-logging.

High Court Seeks

Explanation: Meanwhile, the High Court has expressed discontent over

water-logging in the city. The HC has asked Nagpur Municipal Corporation about

its claims that cleaning of rivers and canals and ongoing construction works before

the onset of monsoon.

The court has

sought reply from the reply from the Municipal Corporation, Public Works

Department and the Police.

The HC had suo

motu taken cognizance of water-logging in the city on Tuesday. Next hearing on

the issue has been fixed for July 31.
