Kolkata, 30 July (H.S.): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday submitted a status report before the Sealdah court in connection with the investigation into the rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. A Special Investigation Team (SIT), constituted following the Calcutta High Court’s directions, is probing various aspects of the case.

During the hearing, the victim’s family raised four major issues before the court. The family first sought an update on the investigation into former Trinamool Congress MLA Nirmal Ghosh and questioned the progress regarding his arrest. The family alleged that after the incident, the victim’s body was taken from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to a crematorium in Panihati, North 24 Parganas, where the last rites were performed hastily. They claimed that this may have resulted in the destruction of crucial evidence. The family has already approached the court against Nirmal Ghosh and two others.

The family also demanded that the friends who had dinner with the deceased on the night before the incident on August 9, 2024, as well as those who spoke to her last, should be questioned. According to the family, their statements could provide important information and help advance the investigation.

The family further alleged that the role of certain personnel of the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) involved in the initial investigation should also be examined. It sought an update on the probe into allegations of evidence tampering or destruction. In May 2026, the Calcutta High Court had directed the CBI to constitute a three-member SIT to investigate similar allegations.

The victim’s family also requested the court to record the statement of the deceased doctor’s mother.

The woman trainee doctor was found dead at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024. During the investigation, civic volunteer Sanjay Roy was arrested. He was subsequently convicted of rape and murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. However, the victim’s family has continued to allege that other influential persons may have been involved in the incident and has sought a wider investigation.

The Calcutta High Court had also expressed dissatisfaction in June over the progress of the CBI investigation into allegations of evidence tampering and lapses in the probe, directing the agency to bring the investigation to a logical conclusion.

The next hearing in the case at the Sealdah court is expected to take place in September.
