New Delhi, 30 July (H.S.): The Patiala House Court in Delhi has cancelled the non-bailable warrant issued against former Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) president and Students’ Federation of India (SFI) joint secretary Aishe Ghosh in connection with an FIR registered during a protest in 2021.

Judicial Magistrate First Class Vijayashree Rathore imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on Aishe Ghosh and warned her to remain present during future court proceedings related to the case.

On July 29, the court had stayed the execution of the non-bailable warrant issued against Ghosh until July 30 and directed her to appear before it personally on Thursday. Appearing for Ghosh, advocates K.N. Jaishankar, K.R. Subhashchandran and Jaimon Andrews argued that the non-bailable warrant had been issued on April 11 but was not served as she was reportedly not found at the given address. However, she was informed about the matter over the phone, following which the court directed her to appear on July 30.

On July 28, police had visited the Delhi office of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) to arrest Aishe Ghosh in connection with the case. The move led to a heated exchange between CPI(M) leaders and police officials. CPI(M) leaders alleged that police were attempting to arrest Ghosh because she had recently led a protest at Jantar Mantar.

The case dates back to a protest held at Bengal Bhawan in Delhi in 2021, following which an FIR was registered against Ghosh under Sections 188 and 447 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Aishe Ghosh had contested the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections as a CPI(M) candidate but was defeated. She had also participated in the “Kakroach Janata Party” protest from its first day.
