Glasgow, 29 July (H.S.): Indian long-distance runner Gulveer Singh created history at the Commonwealth Games 2026 by winning the silver medal in the men’s 10,000-metre race on Tuesday. With a remarkable timing of 27 minutes and 49.78 seconds, Gulveer became the first Indian male athlete to win a medal in this event at the Commonwealth Games.

The achievement also marked India’s first-ever medal in the men’s 10,000-metre category at the Commonwealth Games. Combining both men’s and women’s events, India returned to the podium in this discipline after a gap of 16 years. The last time an Indian athlete won a medal in the event was at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games, where Kavita Raut secured a bronze medal in the women’s 10,000-metre race.

During the race, national record holder Gulveer Singh stayed among the leading runners in the early stages. He was placed third at the 4,000-metre mark but slipped to sixth position after the halfway point. However, he made a strong comeback, moving up to fifth place by the 6,000-metre and 7,000-metre marks.

At the 8,000-metre stage, Gulveer again dropped to sixth position but regained momentum with one kilometre remaining and moved up to fourth place.

In the final stretch, Gulveer produced a stunning burst of speed. He completed the last kilometre in 2 minutes and 29.2 seconds, overtaking his rivals to secure the silver medal in a thrilling finish.

Australia’s Ky Robinson won the gold medal with a timing of 27 minutes and 48.93 seconds, while Isle of Man’s David Mullarkey claimed the bronze medal after clocking 27 minutes and 50.28 seconds. The gap between the gold and silver medallists was just 0.85 seconds, while the difference between silver and bronze was only 0.50 seconds.

Gulveer Singh’s performance has been recorded as a landmark achievement in the history of Indian long-distance running. His silver medal also ended India’s 16-year wait for a podium finish in the Commonwealth Games 10,000-metre event.
