New Delhi, 28 July (H.S.): President Droupadi Murmu, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with several other leaders, on Tuesday congratulated Indian athletes who won medals at the Commonwealth Games 2026 and extended their best wishes for future achievements.

President Murmu, in a post on X, congratulated the Indian medal winners, including Sharmila Dhankar for winning the gold medal in the women’s shot put F57 event, Sarvesh Anil Kushare for securing the silver medal in the men’s high jump event, Valluri Ajay Babu for winning the silver medal in the men’s 79 kg weightlifting event, and Shilpa K. Shayla for clinching the bronze medal in the women’s shot put F57 event.

The President said, “Sharmila, by becoming India’s first Commonwealth Games gold medallist in para athletics, has achieved a historic milestone. Your success will inspire young athletes to perform better in their respective fields. I wish you many more achievements in the years ahead.”

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla congratulated Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam for winning the bronze medal in the women’s 58 kg weightlifting event at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. He said that winning medals in two consecutive Commonwealth Games reflects her exceptional dedication and determination. He wished her continued success and hoped she would keep bringing pride to the nation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Bindyarani Devi for her achievement. He said, “Another medal for India in weightlifting! I am proud of Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam for winning the bronze medal in the women’s 58 kg event at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Her achievement is the result of her hard work and strong determination.”

Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya also congratulated Sharmila Dhankar for her historic gold medal victory. He said that Sharmila created history by winning gold in the women’s shot put F57 event and became India’s first athlete to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal in para athletics. He added that her unwavering spirit had brought pride to the country on the global stage.
