Delhi, 24 July (H.S.): Argentina’s veteran defender Nicolás Otamendi announced his retirement from international football on Thursday, bringing an end to his remarkable 17-year career with the national team. The 38-year-old centre-back played a crucial role in Argentina’s recent golden era, helping the team win the 2022 FIFA World Cup and two Copa America titles.

Otamendi represented Argentina in 139 international matches and featured in four FIFA World Cup campaigns. He was also part of the Argentina squad that finished runners-up at the 2026 FIFA World Cup held in the United States, where the team suffered a 1-0 defeat against Spain after extra time in the final.

Announcing his decision, Otamendi shared an emotional message on Instagram, describing the retirement as one of the most difficult moments of his career. He said ending his international journey with a World Cup final was something he would always remember, despite the disappointing result.

“My career’s final match turned out to be a World Cup final. The result was not what we hoped for, but I am leaving with pride because this team gave everything until the final second. Argentina, thank you for giving me the opportunity to fulfil my dream of becoming a world champion,” Otamendi wrote.

The defender recently ended his successful 16-year European club career and decided to join Argentine giants River Plate. During his time in Europe, he represented several top clubs, including Porto, Valencia, Manchester City and Benfica, achieving major successes and earning recognition as one of the most reliable defenders of his generation.

Known for his aggressive defensive style, leadership qualities and fighting spirit, Otamendi became one of Argentina’s most respected defenders. His performances played a key role in the national team’s resurgence under a successful generation of players.
