Kolkata, 23 July (H.S.): The West Bengal government is set to increase financial assistance under key sports infrastructure schemes to strengthen sporting facilities and encourage greater youth participation in sports, Youth Welfare and Sports Minister Indranil Khan informed the State Assembly on Thursday.

Speaking during the Assembly proceedings, Khan said the government has proposed increasing the maximum financial assistance under the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Sports Infrastructure Development Scheme from ₹10 lakh to ₹15 lakh for clubs, educational institutions and other eligible organisations to develop sports grounds.

He said the enhanced funding would support the development of sports infrastructure in line with international standards. The assistance can be utilised for creating facilities for football, including grounds measuring 115 metres in length and 78 metres in width, as well as infrastructure for cricket, basketball, hockey, volleyball and other sporting disciplines.

The minister also announced a proposal to enhance financial support under the Swami Vivekananda Youth Development Scheme. Under the revised proposal, the one-time grant for establishing multi-gyms and purchasing gym equipment in schools, colleges, universities and other institutions will be increased from ₹3 lakh to ₹5 lakh.

Khan said expanding sports infrastructure is essential for the physical and mental development of young people. He added that the government is committed to strengthening sports facilities across the state and providing greater financial support to institutions to promote a vibrant sporting culture.
