New Delhi, 23 July (H.S.): Amid ongoing student protests, lawyers of the Supreme Court on Thursday collectively read the Preamble of the Constitution at the Supreme Court lawns.
The programme, held during the afternoon, was led by former Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court Justice S. Muralidhar, who also heads the United Nations-appointed Commission of Inquiry on Gaza, along with senior advocate Indira Jaising.
Several lawyers, including Supreme Court Bar Association President Vikas Singh and a number of young advocates, participated in the event. Senior lawyers present on the occasion included Anand Grover, Anjana Prakash, Shadan Farasat, Arundhati Katju, Mahalakshmi Pavani, Nandita Rao, P.V. Surendranath, Manali Singhal, Sangeeta Bharti, P.V. Dinesh, Jayant Thakur and Vrinda Grover.
During the programme, several lawyers carried the national flag and copies of the Constitution in their hands while reading the Preamble.
In recent days, some lawyers had collectively raised their voice against the alleged police action during the student protest at Jantar Mantar, where demonstrators were demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the paper leak issue.
Various lawyers’ organisations, including the Supreme Court Bar Association, Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association and the All India Lawyers Union, had also expressed concern over the alleged police action against protesters.
The collective reading of the Constitution’s Preamble at the Supreme Court was seen as part of the continued expression of concern by sections of the legal community over the issue.
