Kolkata, 23 July (H.S.): BJP MLA Soumen Kafra, representing Bhatar in Purba Bardhaman district, on Thursday urged the West Bengal government to introduce complete prohibition on the lines of Bihar, citing the growing social and criminal impact of alcohol and substance abuse.

Raising the issue during the Assembly proceedings, Kafra said the increasing consumption of liquor, cannabis and other intoxicants was adversely affecting society and contributing to a rise in crime across the state.

He argued that alcohol and narcotic substances were not only fuelling criminal activities but were also leading to serious social and family-related problems. According to the legislator, substance abuse was pushing many young people towards crime and other anti-social activities.

Kafra appealed to the state government to seriously consider implementing total prohibition in West Bengal, similar to the policy adopted in Bihar. He said stringent measures were necessary to build a drug-free and socially healthy society and to effectively curb crime.
