Buenos Aires, 22 July (H.S.): Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez shared an emotional message on social media after the team’s defeat against Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, thanking fans for their unwavering support and saying that the final result does not define the team’s entire journey.

Argentina, who entered the tournament as defending champions, suffered a 0-1 defeat against Spain in extra time in the final, missing out on the opportunity to retain the World Cup title.

Taking to X, Martinez wrote, “The pain of not being able to bring home the trophy that we all deserved will remain in our hearts, but I am extremely proud of this jersey, my teammates, the coaching staff, officials, medical team, chefs, kit staff and everyone who gave their best to make this campaign successful. Above all, thank you to the fans who gave us their love, strength and passion. My only wish is that this unity always remains.”

Martinez also congratulated Spain for winning the World Cup title. “Congratulations to Spain for this incredible and completely deserved achievement,” he said.

Reflecting on Argentina’s World Cup journey, Martinez said the team faced several difficult situations but never made excuses and always looked for ways to move forward.

“I want to tell my fellow Argentinians not to judge our entire journey only by the final result. We faced many challenges, turned the impossible into possible and never searched for excuses, but instead found reasons to keep moving forward. We defended our country’s colours with complete respect, both on and off the field,” Martinez wrote.

He added, “The moments we shared with our families and millions of Argentine fans will always remain unforgettable. Representing all of you will always be a matter of great pride for us.”

Concluding his message, Martinez wrote, “Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Let us take care of our country. Argentina, I love you.”
