US President Donald Trump became the centre of attention during the 2026 FIFA World Cup trophy presentation after remaining on stage alongside Spain’s players during their victory celebrations following their win over Argentina in the final.

Spain lifted the World Cup trophy after defeating Argentina 1-0 in extra time in a tightly contested final. However, the post-match ceremony attracted headlines after Trump appeared to stay with the Spanish team as they prepared for their official trophy-lifting photographs.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino was seen attempting to guide Trump away from the stage after the trophy presentation. Despite the gesture, Trump remained near the players and applauded as Spain celebrated their historic victory.

The incident quickly drew reactions on social media, with several football fans criticising Trump’s decision to remain in the spotlight during the champions’ celebration. Some users described the moment as an unusual interruption to Spain’s official trophy ceremony.

This was not the first time Trump faced similar criticism during a sporting celebration. Earlier, he had also remained on stage during Chelsea’s Club World Cup trophy presentation, drawing attention away from the winning team’s celebrations.

Trump and Infantino had earlier received mixed reactions from spectators when they entered the field before the presentation ceremony. The US president watched the final from a secured area in the stadium alongside senior officials and other dignitaries.

During the ceremony, Trump presented medals to players and officials. He had earlier expressed support for Argentina, saying it was difficult to bet against Lionel Messi, one of football’s greatest players.

Spain secured the title through Ferran Torres’ extra-time goal, with the forward scoring in the 106th minute after converting a decisive attacking move. Argentina’s challenge was further affected after they were reduced to 10 players following Enzo Fernandez’s red card.

The 2026 World Cup final marked another major global sporting event hosted in the United States, with Trump later suggesting that he would like to see the country host the tournament again in the future. He also discussed ideas for expanding future World Cup hosting arrangements with FIFA chief Gianni Infantino.
